Consumers feel misunderstood by brands

A study led by Attest reveals that perfume brands, female clothing and gaming top the list of the biggest offending sectors to wrongly estimate their consumers’ spending habits and desires.
The 2,000-strong survey of UK-based adults aged 18-75 aimed to discover more about consumer attitudes and how Britons feel they are represented by corporate brands.
Respondents were initially asked if they felt they were misunderstood by brands in general, with 35 per cent stating they feel this way. Within this group of misunderstood respondents, the majority at 82 per cent feel as if they are not well represented and are often ignored by big labels.
Following on from this, to find out more about which sectors were seen as the biggest offenders, respondents were provided with a list and were asked to actively rank where and how they feel the most misunderstood as consumers.
The sectors that get it wrong
Perfume companies are ranked by 26 per cent of respondents as the sector most likely to misjudge its customer base, followed by women’s clothing brands (23 per cent), game companies (19 per cent), insurance companies (17 per cent) and make-up brands (10 per cent).

Businesses turn to ex-hackers to improve cyber security

A fifth (20 per cent) of UK businesses have already invited hackers to assess their cyber security and systems and a further 37 per cent are open to the idea.
The report from Radware finds that three in five respondents experienced a cyber attack in the last 12 months.
Concerns over the growing threat lead four in five respondents to state that security is now a CEO-level concern while 33 per cent state that a change in C-level awareness is critical in order to thwart the latest attacks.
Among the leading concerns for executives is the Internet of Things (IoT), with connected devices identified by 29 per cent as ‘extremely likely’ to be a target for cyber criminals over the next three to five years.
Although businesses understand the threat, many are unsure how or where to direct their resources to defend against it, leading to the consideration of hiring an ex-hacker.
Ransomware is high on the agenda too, with around one in seven respondents experiencing a ransom attack over the last year. In fact, at least three companies said they were under attack at the time of the survey.

Beating absenteeism during the European Championships

Recent research by Kronos reveals that more than a third of employees (35 per cent) expect the European Championships to cause more absenteeism than Wimbledon (18 per cent) and the Rio Olympics (11 per cent) combined.
One of the easiest options for employers, although it might not be preferable to all, would quite simply be to allow employees the opportunity to watch the important games, particularly those involving the home nations, while they are at work.
Jacob Demeza-Wilkinson, consultant at ELAS says, ‘The advantages of this are that there would only be a two-hour break from work, rather than employees missing full days. Of course the disadvantages with this are that there would be an additional two-hour break in the day on top of normal breaks/lunches etc so productivity would still be somewhat affected.’
It is also important to note here that employers should ensure that they have a TV licence if they intend to show the football, as one is required to show any live TV.

Demeza-Wilkinson says an alternative would be to offer rewards/bonuses throughout the period of the tournament for good attendance or good performance.

The transformation of the payday loan industry in the UK

The UK’s payday loan industry continues to see a huge transformation following the introduction of FCA regulation in January 2015.
At one point, the payday loan industry was flying, with brands advertising on every radio and TV channel under the sun and sponsoring major sports teams across the UK. Yet the once £2 billion sector has seen major changes to address its reputation of ‘loan sharking’ and ‘irresponsible lending’. A huge overhaul of its regulatory framework and advertising driven by politicians and religious figures has seen the market shrink and top lender Wonga.com to record losses of £80 million in 2015.
New regulation from the Financial Conduct Authority
The FCA began regulating the payday loan industry in April 2014, taking over from The Office of Fair Trading. Following 29,000-payday loan related complaints recorded by The Citizens Advice Bureau in 2014, a tough approach was taken.
The regulator reviewed the practices of the some of the biggest lenders, which inevitably led to £220 million fine for Wonga, £15.4 million for Dollar Financial (The Money Shop, PaydayExpress and PaydayUK) and £1.7 million for Quickquid. The fines were partially paid to the regulator and some amounts were required to refund customers that should not have received loans in the first place due to their limited criteria.
