Natura Cosmetics Gets A Sustainability Makeover

Natura Cosmeticos has long been considered a leader in sustainability, known for materials and marketing innovations that aim to reflect its tagline of “well being/being well.”  The Brazilian cosmetics maker has been recognized by organizations such as Corporate Knights, the U.N. Environmental Program, SustainAbility and the Boston Consulting Group.
For instance, as a founding member of the Union for Bioethical Trade, Natura has promised to source ingredients sustainably without harming biodiversity, including getting one-third of its raw materials from the Amazon.
The company is currently working on Programa Amazonia, a plan to inaugurate its Ecoparque — a 1.7-million-square-meter closed-cycle industrial complex in the Amazon region — in March. The company hopes to eliminate waste and guarantee a clean destination for biproducts from Amazonian fruits, oils and berries that are used to produce its cosmetics. The plan also will involve the application of innovations from process and product research.

“For example, we press the seeds from a certain palm tree or passion fruit and the rest is discarded,” said Renata Puchala, manager of Natura’s Amazonia Program. “At the other end, after we process the seeds, there is natural waste that needs a proper destination to close the full cycle.”

According to Puchala, Natura is in talks with other companies to form partnerships in

Natura Cosmetics Joins B Corps: Will Other Big Business Embrace Sustainability Certification?

The Guardian reports:
Natura, Brazil’s top cosmetics, fragrance and toiletries maker, this week became the largest – and first publicly traded – company to attain B Corps sustainability certification.
The certification program, which is run by B Lab, is designed to encourage high standards of environmental and social stewardship and transparency among businesses.
Until now, in some ways, B Corps has seemed like a noble – if limited – experiment, a method for ideologically driven companies to pursue sustainability while still surviving in a business environment that is red in tooth and claw.
While the program has had considerable growth – currently, there are more than 1,170 B Corps businesses located across 37 countries – the majority are small and privately owned. The question arises: for all the good that the B Corps does, can it appeal to major economic players?
Natura’s recent move suggests that the answer is yes. And the Brazilian company isn’t the only prominent, well-funded business that has recently sought certification. Earlier this month, crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and energy company Green Mountain Power both announced that they have attained B Corps certification.
Both companies are strong players in their respective fields. In March 2014,Kickstarter passed the $1bn mark in lifetime funding – and over half of that money was raised

Herbalife Director Is Being Charged In Brazilian Embezzlement Case

A director of U.S. nutrition company Herbalife is among 12 people charged in a years-old Brazilian embezzlement case that has never been mentioned in Herbalife public disclosures, according to court documents and company filings.
Herbalife has become one of America’s most closely-watched companies after billionaire investors William Ackman and Carl Icahn squared off with enormous bets on its future, with Ackman betting on its demise and Icahn on its success.
Prosecutors in Brazil charged current Herbalife board member Pedro Cardoso with money laundering in 2008 for allegedly participating in an embezzlement scheme a decade earlier that siphoned 26.7 million Brazilian reais ($10.4 million) from the state government in Espirito Santo.
The 8th Criminal Court of Vitoria ordered bailiffs to serve him with a subpoena in 2010, but they did not locate him and the case remains open, according to court filings and a court source.
According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s rules on disclosure, companies must report legal proceedings that are material to evaluating the integrity of a director. Herbalife has not made the information about Cardoso’s case public, according to proxy statements it has filed since 2009 when Cardoso joined the company’s board.

Cardoso said in a statement dated this week emailed to
