Steve Van Andel, the co-chief executive officer of direct sales giant Amway Corp., plans to retire at the end of 2018.
The early announcement is intended to give the Ada-based company time to figure out who will take over his role as co-CEO, a position he shares with Doug DeVos. Van Andel plans to remain as chairman of the board while stepping away from day-to-day duties. Doug DeVos serves as company president.
“My goal is to stay engaged,” Van Andel told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.
“I love the Amway business. I love being part of it. I love what Amway does and what Amway stands for.”
Van Andel has worked for Amway for 45 years and has served as co-chief executive since 1995, when he succeeded his late father, Jay, who co-founded the company with Rich DeVos, father of Doug DeVos.
“Both our dads told us don’t ever forget two heads are better than one and that probably helped out our partnership,” Steve Van Andel said.
He said a decision hasn’t been made if one of his siblings Nan, David or Barb, or even if someone outside the family would take over the co-CEO responsibilities. David Van Andel is founder and CEO of the Van Andel

Amway Opens $2.5M Business Center In Los Angeles

In recent years, Amway has been opening dozens of brick-and-mortar locations around the globe.
The pace has been slower in the company’s North America market. Amway recently opened a location in the Los Angeles area, four years after trying the concept out in New York.
Depending on its success, more could be added in major U.S. cities.
“We will be looking at if we do another one, what is the next, most logical place for us to go,” said Jim Ayres, Amway North America’s managing director. “I would suspect though in the coming years, we will do at least a few more of these in major cities around the United States and Canada.”
He added that Amway will take a measured approach to opening more locations because they require a large capital expense.

Amway Invests $1.5 Million In Philippines

Michigan-based Amway, is strengthening its operations in the Philippines by investing an additional $1.5 million. The money will be used to upgrade facilities and infrastructure to support the market, which Amway believes has the potential for significant growth.
According to Amway Philippines Country Manager Elenita Olmedo, declining poverty incidence and rising incomes is making the Philippines an upper-middle income country, providing more opportunities for retailing, especially for consumer goods in the fast-growing categories of health and wellness, beauty and home care.
“The Philippines is in a unique position to provide a fertile testing ground for some new ideas for Amway,” said Amway Philippines Country Manager Elenita Olmedo. “Our economy is currently among the fastest growing in Southeast Asia and has been on this stable trend in recent years.”

Struggling In China, Amway Bets On Technology For Turnaround

Amway is looking to rebuild its business in China with the help of improvements such as an online ordering platform for its agents and experience centers, as sales in the country have fallen over the past three years.
Two decades after entering China, the country remains the biggest global market for the Michigan-based firm, representing about 30 percent of its $8.8 billion in total sales last year.
But China revenue has contracted from nearly $4 billion in 2013, to reach 17.7 billion yuan ($2.57 billion) in 2016.
“We’re struggling a bit here now,” Doug DeVos, Amway’s president, told Reuters in an interview late Tuesday in Beijing.

According to an interview Amway President Dog deVos had with Economic Times, a magazine in India, Amway has half a million distributors in that country.

Amway Found Violating Multiple Regulations On MLM

According to the investigation results publicised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade dated January 12, 2017, Amway Vietnam is unable to show evidence that it had fulfilled its responsibility of informing some provincial Departments of Industry and Trade for the 3rd, 4th , 5th, 6th and 7th that it changed its certificate of registration of MLM activities.
