Why Direct Selling Beauty Brands Are Making a Comeback
by Ramya Chandrasekaran • • 0 Comments
Town & Country Magazine says in an article in its latest issue that guerrilla marketing tactics and major product upgrades are enabling direct selling beauty brands to have their moment.
Once upon a time, a woman who wanted to make a little extra money while caring for her children would open her home to a few friends from the neighborhood, serve up some deviled eggs, and expound upon the life-changing benefits of a mauve lipstick or a nestled set of Tupperware. Fast-forward a few decades and the social (or direct) selling landscape has changed—dramatically.
“I’ll hand off a bag through a car window at school drop-off. I’ll meet someone for a quick coffee. I’ll drop some in the mail to send to friends across the country,” says Paige Cleveland, a top-performing direct saleswoman for Beautycounter, a personal

Three Startups That Want To Steal Avon’s Look
by Tina Williams • • 0 Comments
With the “company for women” struggling, these three startups are hoping to take a big bite of the direct-sales beauty market.
Although a fake takeover bid recently led to a spike in Avon stock, the longtime cosmetics powerhouse built by millions of local “Avon ladies” has been slowly declining. After years as the top global direct sales company, Avon slipped out of that spot in 2014. The company’s revenue declined 20% last year to $8.85 billion, from a peak of $11.1 billion in 2011, and after a lengthy probe into corruption in its China operations, Avon agreed to pay a $135 million settlement.
So, are we looking at the end of the era in which women purchased beauty products from friends and neighbors who sold door-to-door? Not necessarily. There are a number of young, upstart companies that are trying to

by Nicole Dunkley • • 0 Comments
Rodan + Fields, the fastest growing company in premium skin care among leading companies last year in the U.S.*, began business operations in Canaday. Entry into the Canadian market is the first step in the company’s market expansion outside the United States since the San Francisco-based company launched in 2008.
Rodan + Fields’ focused business strategy has generated high double-digit compound annual growth, driving revenue for 2014 to more than $300 million USD, and with the addition of Canada to the business, the company sees significant opportunity for sustained profitable growth.
“Our brand vision is a global one and our Canadian launch is a key strategic milestone on our globalization roadmap,” said Lori Bush, President and CEO, Rodan + Fields.
“Our Canadian initiative not only addresses the demand for our products from our neighbors to the north, it validates the foundational infrastructure that will enable us to effectively extend our business model beyond North American borders.”
In 2007, Rodan + Fields became the first prestige skincare line to exit the department store for the world of direct selling, with the brand reintroduced in 2008 as a newly-formed company. The company’s thousands of Independent Consultants quickly generated revenue that far exceeded

by Nicole Dunkley • • 0 Comments
The Bay Area’s 100 largest women-owned businesses generated $3.1 billion in revenue last year. In a landscape of tech companies, a skincare company actually landed near the top of the SF Business Times’ list of the Bay Area’s 100 largest women-owned businesses. Rodan + Fields, ranked #3, is SF-based and female-dermatologist-driven. And it made $195,682,033 in revenue last year.
The Business Times attributes the company’s growth to its direct selling model, but it takes more than a business model to make a successful company: the products have to work, too.
Since Rodan + Fields grew 358.6 percent last year —and is expected to post similarly impressive numbers for 2014— there’s no denying that the women at the helm are doing something right.
