In 2004 I opened a B&B in a converted church in Snowdonia. I was a single parent with two children under five. I was apprehensive at the prospect of welcoming strangers into my house and kept imagining one might be an axe murderer. However, I soon realized the best part of running a B&B is all the wonderful people you get to meet. Guests are rarely savage keyboard warriors out to immortalise you with a damning review, but on the contrary are mostly extremely forgiving of the odd mishap. I’ve had my fair share, like an escaped hamster paying a midnight visit in one of the four poster rooms, and other mundane but unavoidable dramas like boiler issues or hot tub breakdowns, but guests on the whole are very tolerant.
They are also in residence when good and bad life events happen to you, such as your child’s birthday celebrations or that sudden phone call when in the blink of an eye a loved one is lost. Extra cash for ‘wet’ pubs hit by Tier 2 and 3 lockdown

UPDATED: Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said there will be a one-off payment in December of £1,000 to “wet” pubs in England – pubs which do not serve food – which are having to close in Tiers 2 and 3.
The Prime Minister made the pledge as part of his opening statement in today’s House of Commons debate on the incoming tier system, which is due to come into effect throughout England from tomorrow.
Mr Johnson said the one-off £1,000 payment recognised how hard pubs have been hit in what is normally “their busiest month”.
However, the Federation of Small Businesses dismissed the gesture, pointing out that £1,000 will cover the cost of a single keg of beer.
The government’s new tiered coronavirus system will slash income for pubs and restaurants, 98 per cent of which will either be in Tier 2 or Tier 3, in half meaning £7.8bn in lost incomes, according to trade body UKHospitality.

The impact of COVID-19 has brought about so many changes for businesses. One of the main changes we’ve seen for restaurant and pub businesses is moving towards takeaway orders.
Data from Kantar shows that deliveries surged in the week leading up to the first lockdown (March 16-22), with delivery trips up 57 per cent year on year.
According to MCA’s Channel Pulse survey (from April 6-12), the average frequency that people used takeaway delivery was 2.3 times that week.
“There have been several success stories to come from the hardship that this year has brought to the hospitality, events, and catering industry, but the biggest, in my opinion, has been the rise of takeaway,” said Charlie Dean, managing director at packaging firm, Catering24.
Not only has it kept a number of our businesses afloat during this most difficult of times, but it has increased the quality of the market to a level we have not seen before.”
