Gale Hughes Earns 9th Mary Kay Car

Imagine never having to pay for a car in 20 years. That’s what one Crozet woman can claim after she picked up her ninth free car Thursday evening.
Gale Hughes is a Mary Kay sales director who says her last car payment was in 1996, when she started selling Mary Kay products. She earned her first free car within two years.
She earns the cars by meeting her sales quota every six months. Thursday, she picked up her ninth car, a black Chevy equinox with the Mary Kay emblem.

“Don’t give up. It’s that idea that I know that this is going to get me through because I know that I’ve worked in other companies for the school system and I know my absolute worst day in another company, for Mary Kay this is just so awesome,” Hughes said.

Hughes is the director of an entire team of sales consultants in the area. All of their teamwork goes toward earning the free cars.

Fueled By Isagenix, Swimmer Conquers Big Swim

On Sunday, August 17, 14-year-old Cali broke a 50-year-old world record. She became the youngest person since 1964 to complete The Big Swim.
This year, 50 swimmers attempted to cross the Northumberland Straight, an open body of water that forms the southern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and stretches from the shores of New Brunswick to the shores of Prince Edward Island—also known as The Big Swim with its 8.6 to 10.5 mile distance depending on the current. It’s an annual tradition for seasoned swimmers to fundraise money for Brigadoon Camp.
Cali’s goal was to raise $10,000 for Brigadoon—a camp that gives children with disabilities or chronic illnesses a chance to make connections with other children. It takes $1,000 to send one child to camp.
Fueled with Isagenix through a year’s worth of practice, Cali had one very important person in mind during her six-hour swim.
“I wanted to complete this swim for my cousin, Kevin, who died of brain cancer when he was 15,” explains Cali. “He never had the opportunity to go to camp, even though he wanted to. I want to give children these opportunities to be around others so they all know they’re supported.”

Time to Reexamine DSA’s Code of Ethics: Suggestions From MLM Attorney, Kevin Thompson

It’s old news now. Avon left the DSA. In their announcement, they stated the DSA’s Code of Ethics needed revision. Specifically, Cheryl Heinonen at Avon said,

“We believe the association’s agenda in the U.S. is overly focused on the issues of a few specific brands rather than industry-wide challenges. . . We believe that the U.S. DSA Code of Ethics requires updating to better reflect the current state of the industry in the U.S.”

In a separate article in the Washington Post, Heinonen gave a quote that shed a little light on what she meant. She said,

“I think it’s problematic when you sell inventory — bulk product — that the person who is acquiring it can’t use themselves and sometimes may not know how to sell,” Heinonen said. She added that the language in the trade association’s code of ethics on this point and other aspects of consumer protection need to be firmer.”

The problem: inventory loading. And I’ll drill down a little deeper because inventory loading, when it exists, is a symptom of a larger problem: lack of product value. In other words, when there’s a lack of legitimate demand for product, companies incentivize participants to “load up” on items they might

Another Wall Street Principal Shows Support For Herbalife

Kyle Bass, founder and principal of Hayman Capital Management, says he believes Herbalife is not a ponzi scheme and is a legitimate business model on an interview with CNBC. He even goes as far as saying they’ve had one of their own traders sign up with Herbalife to gain an understanding of the model to make sure it’s legitimate.
Bass became well-known after successfully predicting and benefitting from the subprime mortgage crisis by purchasing credit default swaps on subprime securities issued by various investment banks (similar to shorting the bonds).
Bass has since continued to attract media attention for his prediction of the European sovereign-debt crisis and his expectations regarding the economic future of Japan and Argentina.
Bass reminded CNBC viewers that Ackman originally went long on Pre-Paid Legal stocks (now a privately held company called Legal Shield) and shared his views on it not beign a pyramid scheme, nearly an identical explanation to why he thinks Herbalife is a pyramid scheme and is shorting that stock instead.
How long Ackman will continue to battle the Herbalife stock remains to be seen as he placed a hefty $1 Billion dollar short on the company about a year ago. The Herbalife/Ackman battle has become one of the most talked about

FDA Issues Warning Letters To Reprimand False Claims

Young Living and doTERRA distributors were reprimanded after the Food and Drug Administration FDA issued warning statements via overnight delivery to CEO Gary Young and David Stirling. Young Living and doTERRA both use independent distributors as a sales-force.
The majority of complaints the FDA issued in the warning letters involved the way some independent distributors marketed the companies’ products. Primarily, the FDA was concerned with Young Living and doTERRA consultants’ online marketing material for the brands’ essential oils.
According to FDA regulations, neither dietary supplements nor essential oils are allowed to be marketed by the company that sells them in such a way that it appears as though the products can prevent, cure or treat any disease. If a company does market in that manner, the product is considered a drug by the FDA. If a product is a drug, it must be approved by the FDA. So, any product marketed to cure, treat or prevent a disease, that is not already an FDA approved drug, is considered an illegal, unapproved drug by the FDA.
The FDA found that Young Living essential oils were marketed for “viral infections (including ebola), Parkinson’s disease, autism, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, insomnia, heart disease, post-traumatic stress disorder

Avon Relaunches Marketing Plan And Focuses On U.S.

In an exclusive interview with Fortune magazine, CEO of Avon talks about a marketing plan they hope will revive their sales.
Avon Products is betting heavily on an e-commerce and social-selling relaunch to get Avon back to profitability next year. The world’s largest direct seller of beauty products urgently needs to stanch an exodus of its famous Avon Ladies that has led both the size of salesforce and revenue in North America to fall by half in only a few years, and lose nearly $150 million.
Avon CEO Sheri McCoy (No. 27 on our Most Powerful Women list) sat down with Fortune for an exclusive interview, explaining why she thinks this initiative is so important and why she remains committed to the U.S. market.
Why the U.S. remains a priority even as some industry and Wall Street analysts say Avon should pack it in in its home market:

“To not compete in one of the largest markets in the world doesn’t make sense.”
“It’s the founding country of the brand- there are a lot of roots to the brand.”
“It’s easy to say, let’s walk away from it—I don’t think it’s the right thing to do.”

“Beauty and direct-selling in the U.S. are both growing: so it’s attractive from that standpoint.”
