Indian Direct Selling Grew by 6.5% to $1.18 Billion In 2014-15

 
Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) in association with PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry released the Annual Survey Report 2014-15 on the Indian Direct Selling Industry.
The highlights of the report are:

Gross sales stand at INR 79,583 million ($1.18 billion) in 2014-15 as against INR 74,722 million (($1.11 billion) in 2013-14.
The Industry has registered a growth rate of about 6.5 per cent in 2014-15 as compared to 4.3 per cent in 2013-14
Wellness and healthcare products contributed the largest share at a total of 42 per cent of the sales revenue of direct selling, while the cosmetics and personal care products contributed 34 per cent, homecare products, 11 per cent and consumer and household durables seven per cent.

Direct Selling Business Critical For India’s growth

 
The Indian direct selling industry has an advocate in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) of the Ministry of Commerce. Speaking at an event about Direct Selling, Amitabh Kant, Secretary (DIPP) said that said that the Direct Selling industry is a critical part of India’s growth story as it contributes to employment, entrepreneurship, growth of MSMEs, and most importantly women empowerment, according to a press release by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
Speaking at an event about direct selling – the marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location, by industry body (Ficci), Kant said the industry had enormous growth potential.

IDSA Meets AP Chief Minister To Discuss Direct Selling Legislation

 
Indian Direct Selling Association along with Industry Chamber FICCI met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to discuss issues the Direct Selling Industry is facing in the state.
The meeting, held in Andhra Pradesh Bhawan in New Delhi, was attended by Rajat Banerji, Chairman, Indian Direct Selling Association along with Shilpa Gupta, Head- Retail, FMCG and Gems & Jewellery Division in FICCI.
Rajat Banerji, Chairman, IDSA shared with Naidu the industry statistics highlighting that the Indian Direct Selling market is a INR 74 billion (2013-14) and has been recording double digit growth of more than 16 percent over the past four years, but was de-growing by 12% in the twin states of AP/Telangana due to lack of regulatory clarification. Indian Traders’ Body Wants Direct Selling Legislation

 
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has sought a separate legislation to regulate and monitor direct selling business in the country.

“The Indian direct selling industry is growing at a phenomenal rate and has a huge growth potential. More than 50 per cent distributors engaged in direct selling business are household women and in this way, the direct selling business is promoting women empowerment in the country to a distinct level”, said CAIT national secretary general Praveen Khandelwal.

CAIT in a a letter to Union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan said, “Since the direct selling industry is poised for growth, it is imperative to bring it under an appropriate legislation. Women Form 58.3% Of Indian Direct Selling Industry

 
While door-to-door selling is a common phenomenon is many localities, the numbers have increased indicating a rise in its potential, especially for women in India. Direct Selling provides accessible business opportunities to people looking for alternative sources of income, and whose entry is generally not restricted by gender, age, education, or previous experience. 
According to the Annual Survey Report of the Indian Direct Selling industry, women contribute almost 58.3 per cent in 2013-14.

“Women form a significant chunk of direct sellers, and from a current 2,551,189 women, their numbers is expected to grow at eight per cent making a whopping 55,07,820 self-employed women by 2025,” informs Chavi Hemanth, secretary general, Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA).

Indian Direct Selling Contributes USD 157 Million To Govt In Taxes

 
There is a need to facilitate clear understanding of the concept of direct selling to give its due place, according to Bejon Kumar Mishra, Consumer Policy Expert and Founder of Consumer Online Foundation, New Delhi.
Speaking at a seminar on direct selling on impact on the livelihood of micro entrepreneurs organised by the The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in the southern Indian city of Hyderabd on Monday, Mishra said direct selling should be understood in the way its should be.

Indian Direct Selling Industry Doubles In Last Decade

 
Business Standard in India reports that self employment opportunities generated by the direct selling industry in India has more than doubled in the last decade, to 96.3 million people in 2013, from 43.8 million in 2001, according to a latest survey.
With over 14 years of activity in India, the direct selling industry has touched a size of about Rs  7,472 crore in the Financial Year 2014.
According to the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA), “The sector offered self employment opportunities to 43.8 million direct sellers in 2001, which is now, in 2013, stood at 96.3 million.”
The IDSA reports that nearly 43% market share of global direct selling industry is held by Asia-Pacific markets in 2013 at $ 77,569 million recording a growth rate of 12.6%.

Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) announces its new Executive Committee at the General Body Meeting held in New Delhi. Mr. Rajat Banerji, National Head Corporate Affairs, Amway India Enterprises has taken over as the New Chairman of the Association from Mr. Ajay Khanna, Country Manager, Herbalife International India Pvt. USD 1.1 billion Indian Direct Selling Industry Affected by Lack of Laws

 
Often mistaken for Ponzi schemes, the Rs,7200 crore (approximately USD 1.1 billion) direct selling industry has taken a blow in the absence of clear laws.
Gurgaon resident Harpreet Kaur, 49, completed her MPhil in psychology from Delhi University in 1988. But marriage came in the way before she could begin her professional career. She spent years as a homemaker before her brother-in-law introduced her to Amway’s direct selling business in 1998. Today, she and her husband boast of hundreds of distributors in their network, selling products worth over Rs.1 lakh a month. “There was a time when all I did was wait for my husband, who ran an electronics unit in Delhi, to return home. Today, both of us are entrepreneurs, and have flexible work hours,” says Kaur.
