Lawmakers Underscore Direct Seller Independence at DSA Legal + Regulatory Conference

Federal and State Officials Highlight Growing Momentum Behind Policies That Protect Independent Work
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Direct Selling Association (DSA) convened its annual Legal + Regulatory Conference last week, bringing together bipartisan lawmakers, senior White House staff, and leading legal experts for discussions on the mounting federal and state pressures on independent work during this year’s conference.
Karalee Geiss of the White House Office of Public Liaison joined a slate of national and state leaders who met with executives from DSA member companies to discuss the administration’s focus on the modern labor landscape and the growing relevance of direct selling in today’s economy.

“The legislators who joined us at the DSA Legal + Regulatory Conference – whether they sit on the Direct Selling Caucus, serve on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, or support H.R. 3495 – were unified on one point: direct sellers know exactly why they choose this channel,”

said Dave Grimaldi, CEO, DSA.

DSA President Reacts To ICCA Allegations

 
Direct Selling Association President Joseph Mariano wrote a blog post on The Hill, a political news site published in Washington D.C, reacting to the allegations by the International Coalition of Consumer Advocates in a post title ‘Direct Selling Deception’.
At an event on Capitol Hill celebrating the contributions of direct selling consultants, a single mother of two, who got divorced and went bankrupt eight years ago, tearfully told me direct selling had changed her life, pulling her and her family back from the brink of disaster.  Her story isn’t so unique among members of our community.  In fact, more than 500 direct selling consultants representing 20 companies, 32 states and the District of Columbia are here in in Washington, DC this week to share with members of Congress compelling, personal stories about how

Two US Congress Members Launch Direct Selling Caucus

 
At a Direct Selling Association (DSA) event on Capitol Hill, U.S. Representatives Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Marc Veasey (D-TX) today announced the creation of a new, bipartisan congressional caucus to build support for direct selling, a retail channel that contributes more than $34 billion to the U.S. economy annually by encouraging opportunities for independent work.  The Direct Selling Caucus, which Reps. Blackburn and Veasey will co-chair, has already enlisted more than 30 members.

“I’ll never forget the business and intrapersonal skills direct selling taught me when I began my career, and I’m excited to continue to build support for the opportunity among my colleagues on Capitol Hill,” said Rep. Blackburn. “Running my own business on my own terms was an extremely rewarding experience and great preparation for my career in public service.”
