Restart Grant for your small business – what is it and where to claim

Originally written by Timothy Adler on Small Business
Rishi Sunak has announced a £5bn Restart Grant scheme to help any small business most badly affected by Covid-19, according to reports.
A Restart Grant worth up to £18,000 for the largest businesses will help shops, pubs, hotels and any other small business through to June 21, when it’s hoped the final coronavirus restrictions will be lifted.
Mr Sunak is also expected to announce on Wednesday that other small business support schemes such as furlough will be extended until the end of June.
Where to find your Restart Grant
The Restart Grant scheme, administered by local councils, will help almost 700,000 small business owners including those running shops, pubs, clubs, hotels restaurants, gyms and hair salons.
Non-essential retail businesses will get up to £6,000 per premises through the Restart Grant scheme to help them reopen. Shops will reopen no earlier than April 12, according to the Government’s Covid-19 roadmap.
More Restart Grant money will be available for any small business in hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gyms, which will reopen later and will be more affected by restrictions. They can receive up to £18,000, depending on their rateable value.
Meanwhile, local authorities in England will also get an extra

Small business should get HMRC refund to cover Covid losses, say MPs

Small business and the self-employed should get a tax refund to cover their Covid losses, an influential Treasury select committee has recommended.
Under a “loss carry-back” scheme, any business, whether it’s a limited company or a sole trader, would get a cheque back from HMRC reimbursing them for Covid losses, providing they paid tax in Britain for three years before the pandemic.
A similar policy was adopted during economic crises in 1991 and 2008.

The Government should also look favourably on a further extension of the Annual Investment Allowance – which provides tax relief for expenditure on most plant and machinery – and possibly keep it permanent at the current level.
In its Tax After Coronavirus report, the select committee says that now is not the time for tax rises or clawing money back post pandemic. That said, significant fiscal measures, including revenue raising, will possibly be needed in the future, MPs said.
A moderate increase in corporation tax could raise revenue without damaging growth, the committee agreed.
Rishi Sunak is reportedly going to announce a stepped increase in corporation tax from 19 per

Why embracing scarcity is attractive for investment

My favourite definition of entrepreneurialism is from Professor Howard Stevenson of Harvard Business School — “the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled”.
It captures the noble struggle of an entrepreneur to create something big from little, to use their innovation, cunning and agility to overcome the inherent advantages of scale, expertise and trust that large businesses have.
Conventional theory about economies of scale would suggest that big companies are unassailable. But over the last couple of decades, we have increasingly seen this is not the case, with numerous examples of scale creating paralysis and new businesses being the drivers of innovation and new business models.
I’ve an unusual perspective on the business world, having worked within large corporates, then (and still) as an innovation consultant to the leaders of large businesses (such as IKEA & AB InBev) and years of investing in & helping start-ups. My belief is that an entrepreneur’s greatest advantage is born from scarcity. Entrepreneurs have…
From these constraints are born the necessity and freedom to rapidly and cheaply experiment, learn and iterate — with the main effort focused on the customer. Large businesses get fixated on the risk — of spending too much,
