Small business SEO: 6 easy wins to boost your website ranking

Originally written by Helen Pollitt on Small Business
Owners and marketers of small businesses often tell the same story when asked about SEO; they don’t have the time to write the content they feel is needed to do well at SEO. Thankfully though, churning out masses of copy every month is not the key to climbing small business SEO rankings. However, a good content strategy is. It will help ensure your products and services are visible when someone searches with relevant terms.
So, how should you write copy for the benefit of small business SEO?
Blogs are not SEO
When writing copy for the purpose of ranking well in the organic search results, this does not automatically equal blog posts. Although your blog can be a great place to target the terms that people at the “top of the funnel” might be searching for, it is not always the most important content for you to be writing.
There needs to be a strategy behind the copy that you write for it to bring about ROI. Ensure your product and service pages are well written with keyword-targeted copy before you move on to writing blog posts.

Best UK business phone and broadband deals – how to choose

Originally written by Nathan Hill-Haimes on Small Business
As your business grows and develops, it’s natural that your phone and broadband requirements are likely to change. Coupled with the evolving nature of the workplace, multiple locations, increased security threats and flexible working patterns, choosing the right solution can be confusing. Here are some tips for deciding on the best phone and broadband solution for your business.
Speed
Broadband packages for business are much faster than home broadband solutions and also provide greater choice; you can opt for either ADSL or fibre and can even choose a leased line. It can be tempting to opt for the highest speeds available, with some providers offering up to 500Mbps, but it is worth being mindful that coverage may be limited. As a rough guideline, most business broadband plans will offer between 20Mbps to 80Mbps. If your business requirement is for much faster upload and download speeds, it would be sensible to move away from fibre broadband and explore a leased line instead. Leased lines are symmetrical, and this means that you are able to gain upload and download speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Originally written by John Bell on Small Business
While the nation has been gripped by Brexit over the past three years, another hot topic for those in the contracting sector is the impact of the new off-payroll legislation, otherwise known as IR35. In particular, its ramifications when it’s rolled out to the private sector in April 2020.
We know that when the reforms hit the public sector in 2017 many public-service hirers put all contractors inside IR35 to avoid any comeback. Come April 2020 the same could happen.
Faced with being deemed an employee and unable to continue working through their own personal service company (PSC), many contractors will consider their options. Some could choose to work through a different model, such as an umbrella, but many contractors may decide to shutter their limited personal service company and pursue alternative paths.
So, how do you wind up your personal services company ahead of IR35 coming into effect next April?
‘Start the MVL conversation with your accountant now’
Voluntary strike off
A contractor closing a business can apply for voluntary company strike off at Companies House but a Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL) may be more appropriate. A strike-off request could be turned down if a business has creditor
