How 5G mobile technology will help your small business

Originally written by Gavin Davis on Small Business
This year will be the one long-awaited 5G technology starts to take off. Many expect this to be a game-changer and, according to Ericsson, by 2024 there will be over 1.5 billion of us connected to 5G.
However, 5G technology offers more than mobile calling or faster internet browsing. Increased productivity and the emergence of new industries are additional potential benefits.
According to a study from Qualcomm, by 2035 5G technology could underpin up to £9.3 trillion worth of goods and services in industries such as retail, healthcare, education, transportation, entertainment and more.
‘82% of business leaders, analysts and tech enthusiasts think 5G will drive small business growth, with SMEs becoming more competitive’
As reported by a PSB Research study which surveyed over 3,500 people, 91pc of business decision leaders, analysts and technology enthusiasts expect new products and services to be invented as a result of 5G.

Why boosting productivity means innovating small business technology

Originally written by Partner Content on Small Business
Solving Britain’s productivity puzzle is vitally important if the UK is to compete against other, stronger economies, experts agree. Small business technology is key to unlocking this puzzle – especially as we move towards a screen-based attention economy.
Productivity in Britain has been flat over last 10 years, partly because of low wages, which has weakened the business case for technology investment.
Figures released in May 2019 by the Office for National Statistics revealed that British productivity has improved by just 0.5pc per year since 2008 and lags 15pc behind other G7 countries.
According to a Small Business survey sponsored by Dell Small Business, nearly two thirds of small business owners are losing sleep over their company’s lack of productivity.
Lesley Giles, director of thinktank The Work Foundation, says: “Part of the UK productivity problem is that our employment levels are high, and they’re divided between high-value roles but also low-value jobs.”
However, given the talk about extending the living wage, and if Brexit turns off the supply of low-cost labour, The Work Foundation argues that the business case for automation and digitalisation becomes more compelling.
In any case, argues Richard Blakesley, co-founder of tech fund Capital Pilot, trying

CBI urges incoming Prime Minister to forge new partnership with business

Originally written by Timothy Adler on Small Business
The CBI has urged the next Tory Prime Minister to get behind UK business, singling out the importance of small business as well as corporations.
In a coded message to Boris Johnson – who infamously retorted “f*** business” when asked about big business concerns over Brexit – CBI president John Allan told business leaders in London today that the next Prime Minister needs to “back business” and repair the UK’s reputation with overseas investors.
Allan said: “It’s an opportunity for a new Prime Minister to set an unashamedly pro-enterprise course. To really bring back that feel-good factor. Whether you’re a small high-street retailer or a high-end manufacturer hoping to sell in markets here, Europe and all over the world… that feel-good factor has been absent for too long.
“If the Conservative party wants to claim the mantle of the party of business now is the time to show it. At such a decisive point in our country’s history, if not now then when?”
The employers’ organisation set out a three-point plan as to this new partnership between business and the next Prime Minister:

Repair the UK’s reputation – Allan said that international investors are spooked and are starting
